Power of the Present Moment

Present moment is what is happening right now, it is the only time we ever live because when the future comes it also becomes the present. This is such an important message from the book Power of Now, if you haven't read it I highly recommend it.

Living in the present moment is living in peace. We are the only species who can time travel in our minds, a lot of us live in the past or the future.

Many of us don’t know how to live in the now as our minds are always worrying about what is coming or things that have gone wrong in the past.

So how do we live in the present moment?

Ask yourself:

  • What is this moment presenting to me right now?

  • Spend some time just noticing your emotions

  • If it’s easier, take your journal and write how you are feeling

  • You can also sketch or draw your emotions

This exercise is a simple way of noticing what you are feeling and being more aware of what is happening to you and your senses.

How to live in the present moment:

  • Pause. Just stop and notice what is happening around you

  • Take time to just breathe

  • Mindfulness is being aware of the present moment and practicing it leads to clarity.

  • Try mindful tasting, touching and seeing.

  • Practice gratitude - living in the present moment gives you the opportunity to be grateful for what you have right now

  • It is about connecting with yourself with where you are not where you believe you should be - you feel more alive and purposeful

  • Rituals are tools that can bring us back to the present moment

  • Set an intention to be more present in your life, it’s about living your life rather than waiting for the moment to pass

Fearne Cotton in her book Bigger Than Us: The power of finding meaning in a messy world says that our mind always wants to live in the past or the future and the way to be more present is to have discipline to bring healthy habits into your daily life. It's not the activity itself that matters, but the presence you bring to it.

  • What does living in the present moment mean to you?

  • What rituals could you use in your life to become more present?
